![]() I guess it is true that the news of deaths comes in threes. Spellman recently lost one of its librarians, Gloria Sarna, and as Judy Furnari reported, John Costello passed away last week. I know I reported this man's passing prematurely last time, but I think I can say this with some sad confidence. Father Gannon has lost his battle to survive after another stroke. ![]() Mr. John Costello, history teacher at Spellman for over 30 years, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, March 21st. He will be sorely missed. If anyone can make it, here are the funeral arrangements: Wake: Riewerts Memorial Home - 187 South Washington Ave. - Bergenfield, NJ - Monday: 7-9 pm and Tuesday: 2-4 pm; 7-9 pm Submitted by drewshi on March 18, 2008 - 1:14pm.
![]() Class of 86, I'm using this forum to ask your help. As many of you have read, the Archdiocese will be closing six grammar schools in the region at the end of this school year. My son Eddie's school, St. Lawrence O'Toole, will be on of them. We've gathered the parents together in a very desperate attempt to convince the Archdiocese to give us a chance. Recent news has led me to believe this will be a lost cause, but I'm with them for the fight. (Anybody care to be a benefactor?) Submitted by drewshi on March 14, 2008 - 5:51am.
![]() I now live in Brewster, NY. Recently, the Archdiocese announced that they are shutting St. Lawrence O'Toole school at the end of this school year. This is something the parents in the school are not accepting easily. It's going to be an uphill battle though, because the archdiocese is totally justified in making the move. We have dwindling student enrollment (currently close to 100) and yet we have a CCD program of 700 kids! The problem is many feel that paying such high taxes into the system is enough and they aren't going to pay high tuition as well. This is understandable, but I do it on my Catholic high school salary because I believe in the education St. Lawrence O'Toole offers. Submitted by Judith Furnari on March 2, 2008 - 7:55am.
![]() I am participating again in the annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women's Cancer Research on Saturday, May 3rd. This year I've put together a team for the Spellman Service Society, so I'll be out there with a dozen or so students. If you can donate, I'd really appreciate, or if you'd like to join us, we're Team #3312. If we get 30 people on the team, Spellman will pay for a bus. ![]() My news of Father's Gannon's passing was premature. I won't go into the details of how this information got bungled, but suffice it to say that Father Gannon is alive. He is very ill though after suffering a second stroke recently. Please keep him in your prayers. Submitted by Dave Finnerty on February 11, 2008 - 1:55pm.
